What is there in a name
On the surface the question seems fairly innocuous and a touch rhetoric. But apply it to (in)appropriate situations and see the dimensions it grows to. Let me give an example. Imagine this.
Its a lovely day and everything feels so perfect so appropriate. You are taking a walk back home when you see this gorgeous lady pass by. You are feeling good about yourself and it almost feels like there is a divine design behind things. You stop on your way and with the most benign of smiles ask her name. Now,thats it buddy!! The honeymoon is over. A few hushes, a few muffled voices, a few stares from here and there and you find yourself besieged by an ominous looking human wall, all ready to implode at the faintest call to chivalry. Then you look to the heavens and cry out loud," For heavens sake what is there in a name!!" Few thunderclouds roll, then peals of laughter as you hear these words bellowing down " What a fool! huh!! The whole world is a name show kid! Now go get one for you and stop dragging your dad's to bulls all the time." More laughters as clouds part.
I dont know if i am making any sense. Lets move it to more serious things now. Lets talk about Democracy. Democracy is not only a statement on the political ethos of a scociety but also its social mores. It derives from the Utilitarian philosophy and egalitarianism of past centuries. We have an extended, extrapolated, bizzare version of it here in India. But one thing we did right after kicking the Britishers out was abolishing the discriminatory titles that people added to their names. The constitution went a step ahead and endowed all Indians with the right of equality and backed it with the right to constitutional remedy.
Now one would ask- why this discourse on Democracy if there are better things to write about? Well this was just an attempt to remind myself of some hard learnt civics lessons in school :D and get in the mood for the Republic Day. O Mohe Rang de basanti..basanti..rang de basanti..ding ding ding ding.
